Hold'em
- Reading Hands
You now know the premium hands to start with. When you play one of these preferred hands and the dealer turns up the flop, compare your two cards with the three community cards in the middle of the table. Ask yourself a few questions:
- What is my hand, right now?
- What are the nuts?
- Do I have any draws?
- Are there any other draws that an opponent might have?
- What cards would I like to come on the turn and river?
- Did I get a large enough piece of the flop to make it worthwhile to continue with the hand past the flop?
- Consider how the players have acted on their hands … what might they have?
Let’s say that you liked your hand on the flop, and called any bets. The dealer turns up the turn. Ask yourself these questions:
- Did it help my hand?
- Did it hurt my hand?
- Are there any new draws?
- Did any draws get there?
- Consider the betting action, what do the other players likely have?
- Evaluate whether your hand is worth continuing with.
Let’s say that you called all bets on the turn. All action is completed and the dealer turns up the river. Since this is the last community card, we won’t be getting any more cards and this will be our final betting round. After this betting round all the remaining hands will be turned face up, and a winner declared. Once again, you need to ask yourself a few questions:
- What do I have?
- What are the nuts?
- What do the other players likely have?
